What is a Radioactive Waste Advisor (RWA)?

Radioactive Waste Advisers (RWAs) provide specialist advice on environmental radiation protection and the safe handling of radioactive waste. All organisations that manage and / or generate radioactive waste, are legally required to appoint an RWA and take their advice.

What will the RWA provide? (benefit to client)

If your organisation manages or intends to manage radioactive waste, under the Environmental Authorisations (Scotland) Regulations 2018 (EA(S)R18); Environmental Permitting Regulations 2016 (EPR2016); or the Radioactive Substances Act 1993 then you will be required to take the advice of a suitably qualified and experienced RWA.

ARPS RWAs are accredited through the RPA2000 scheme, which is recognised by the UKs various environment agencies.

Our RWAs are experienced at delivering waste management services and solutions tailored to our client’s needs. Working closely with our nominated contact(s) to identify and quantify waste streams, helping to implement best practice techniques for managing waste at your sites, and helping to organise final disposal. Whenever possible our RWAs will identify cost savings, along with possible treatment and recycling options to help minimise your environmental impact.

Whether handling radioactive materials at the end of their useful working life, or looking at options for decontamination and disposal operations, our RWAs will be able to advise and assist.

Our RWA services include:

  • Preparation and submission of environmental permit applications
  • Preparation of environmental impact assessments, taking account of Best Available Techniques (BAT) & Best Practicable Means (BPM).
  • Preparation and/or review of waste management plans, risk assessments, procedures and spill response plans
  • NORM Quantification Surveys
  • Identifying the correct radiation monitors for use at your site
  • Day-to-day advice on radioactive waste management
  • Site visits and compliance/verification audits
  • Training of personnel - on site or at our premises
  • Source removal and shipping for recycling / disposal
  • Representation at stakeholder and regulator (e.g. SEPA or EA) meetings
  • Costing disposal options

What are my responsibilities?

Whether working to exemptions (now called GBRs in Scotland) or environmental permit conditions, your company will be responsible for ensuring that radioactive waste is safely managed at your site and that your operations minimise its production.

Your organisation must choose and appoint a suitably trained and experienced RWA to advise on the safe management and handling of radioactive waste at your site(s).

Our RWAs are fully accredited under the RPA2000 scheme, and we are confident that we can provide the best advice and solutions for your organisation, which will allow you to safely, responsibly, and legally manage your radioactive waste operations.
